About IHOP

The International House of Pancakes first opened its doors in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California. It was founded by Jerry and Al Lapin with the help of their earliest investors, Trudy and Al Kallis. By 1960, Jerry and Al Lapin started to offer IHOP franchises. Then in 1961, they began trading the company publicly. They started acquiring different businesses under different brands, some of which were Orange Julius, Golde Cup Coffee Shops, Will Wright’s Ice Cream Shoppes, Love’s Wood Pit Barbecue, and The Original House of Pies among others. In 1973, they started introducing the brand under the name IHOP as part of a marketing initiative. IHOP eventually moved their headquarters to Glendale, California and started public trading through NASDAQ. By 1992, they opened their 500th store. In 1993, each IHOP restaurant was earning an average of $1 million and by 1998, they finally reached system-wide sales of $1 billion. In 1999, IHOP began publicly trading using the symbol “IHP” at the New York Stock Exchange. Then in 2001, they opened their 1000th store. Through the years, they also experienced a number of changes in their menu to accommodate trends and varying market needs, such as the SIMPLE & FIT menu that was introduced in 2010 as global awareness about health and obesity became more intense. Today, there are over 1,500 IHOP restaurants in North America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and in other countries around the globe.
