Craigslist is a community-moderated site that enables registered users to submit and post classified ads and take part in discussion boards unique to their respective local areas. Craigslist offers both free and paid accounts. The latter provides additional enhanced features like multiple users under a single account and invoicing. It’s important to note though that while paid posting has its benefits, it is not a Craigslist requirement. Both free and paid accounts offer these three basic features: edit a live post, repost an old ad, and delete a current post.
Established in 1995 as an email distribution list to friends, Craigslist is a private company founded by computer programmer Craig Newmark. The vast majority of early Craigslist postings were posted by Newmark and were ads of social activities happening near his area and information about software and net developers operating in the San Francisco Bay Area. A year after its conception, Craigslist became a web-based service. It features categories centered on job hunting/hiring, buy-and-sell items, products and services, gigs, resumes, as well as discussion forums. In March 2008, Craigslist supported five non-English languages and as of 2012, Craigslist sites are interspersed in more than 700 “cities” from over 70 countries. The company employs over 30 employees and has a headquarters in San Francisco, CA.
