About Veterans Health Administration
The Veterans health Administration (VHA) is a component of the Department of Veterans Affairs. This is a department that was founded back in the year 1778 with the sole mandate of providing and implementing the medical assistance program. The program was geared to provide the veterans and the active duty service members together with their families’ quality medical care. After the formation of thisdepartment many federal agencies were started to provide the medical care to the veterans. The first ever federal agency to be started was the Naval Home which is based in Philadelphia in 1812. In 1853, another agency, the Soldiers home was created to provide the medical care to the veterans. In 1855 there was another agency that was set up, the Elizabeth’s hospital.
In the years that followed, there was an increase in the number of soldiers that were injured as a result of the civil wars. It was due to this that the Congress decided to create another home to cater for the injured and disabled soldiers. So in 1865 the National Home for the Disabled soldiers was created. The VHA saw great improvements in the years that followed. In the mid-1990s the department went through a major transformation that saw the elimination of the underutilized inpatient beds and facilities and the expanding of the Outpatients clinics. Another great improvement that was done was the restructuring of the eligibility rules.
